The Future and the Internet

The internet is still very much in its infancy yet it has already demonstrated how rapidly technology and the free exchange of information has impacted on everyday life. The internet has provided a wealth of information that would have been near unattainable before search engines were able to effectively catalogue information on the internet.

You can now join more mailing lists than you will ever have time to read. There is an abundance of information on every topic and subject and you can spend hours on forums, chats or reading blogs. The internet has allowed networking and making new business relationships. Traditional means of advertising have been challenged by internet advertising which is one of the fastest growing industries...

This article speaks about the future of the internet clearly, it mostly talks about the internet related to business. And we do agree that businesses which do not incorporate themselves to de internet will not have a secured future. Now a days it is quite diffucult to "sell" yourself or your company without the help of internet. The fact that search engines, especially google, has replaced the yellow pages, is certainly true. How many of you look for a music store number on google, or a pharmacy's number? I dont know anything. It is much simpler. Or you either embrace internet or otherwise you are literally out of the world...

Social Implications of Robots in Society

The application of rapidly advancing fields of software and hardware engineering and biotechnology to recreate life or intelligence raises ethical and social issues. There is an ethical responsibility on the part of the creator to ensure that the robot or virtual pet causes no harm. There is also the impact of new technology on society. On the one hand, replacing people with robots may reduce labour costs and contribute to unemployment in society, but new jobs in the information technology industry are created...

This article discusses what are the consequences of involving robots in human life, especially in what reffers to labour. Robots can have a positive effect on human society, but at the same time it has collateral effects. We personally think, that robots will gain "life" if we let them too, as long as we know that robots are just robots, and not human beings. After all robots are a human invention. We also think that robots should have a purpose, what is the use of making a robot just becuase?...They should be able to perform certain tasks, and stick to that. More importantly they should always follow the three rules of robotics. Human beings have to be concient about these inventions and always remember that robots are something we control, they should not be in control of their selfs...they should always have an off-button.

Search Engines

The philosophy

Google’s algorithm is the goose that lays the golden egg but doesn’t cackle. Wales wants it to sqawk its head off
Wales thinks that search on the web is broken, for the same reason that proprietary software is broken: lack of freedom and accountability. He thinks that Google’s search algorithm is a form of “editorial control”; it is of course true that whilst Google has been a relatively good friend to free software and some open standards, they do nevertheless keep their search algorithm secret. It is the goose that lays the golden egg but doesn’t cackle. Wales wants it to squawk its head off. To that end he came up with Wikia. It is released under the GPL and the source code is free for all to examine and amend. Additionally, where search engines like Google rely on that algorithm to power searches, Wikia adds a human element to searching that positively encourages human input to build and extend the search engine. Wiki utilizes
Nutch for its algorithm and Lucene for search; Wales also acquired Grub as an open source web crawler to index the web (and released the source code for it too).
